The foot joint of the flute is composed of 3 keys of a flute C and 4 keys if there is a low B foot. The foot joint keys are the property of the little finger of the hand right. The keys are made so as to be pushed in different combinations with the baby's finger.
One of the weakest points of the flute is the joint where the foot joins the body. This is called the lower tang and can be easily damaged. The articulation of the foot may loosen and cause leakage air and sound leakage or become tight and very difficult to remove or place. This can lead to many problems. The fact is that the articulation of the foot is long, nearly 6 inches in some cases, and ear supports your weight is only half an inch long. In support of this great weight and length, and are continually under pressure of the keys is pushed down it can tend to take toll if not maintained.
As the body of the flute, the foot joint keys, springs and pads are to be maintained. Replacement, grading, and seating all have to do to have the keys seal properly, thus allowing the lower notes to play.
Almost all the keys of the flute work in relation to one or more other keys. This means that when you press on a key which can also cause one or more keys to others, be pressed simultaneously. These keys must be regulated so that when it is required that two or more keys nearby, while must be at the same time or will the loss of sound of the flute and will not play. Regulation of the keys to work like this is probably the most important instrument repair. It requires a delicate balance of bending and leveling of the keys as well as seats on the adjustment of the pads and tension spring.
The upshot of all this must be a feeling that the flute is solid, no rattles or excessive noise issue. No Pads feeling loose or sticky keys. When you press the keys that the pressure must be very clear with great sound and minimal effort. The last thing you want when you are playing a flute or any instrument, really, is struggling with the physicalness of instead of just enjoying the artistic and creative nature of it.
To summarize, you must have respect for the instrument you are playing and give it the attention it needs. Care and maintenance means that it will always be in the manner intended to play and enjoy your creativity without interruptions by physical faults.
